This is a lovely tourist attraction which gives everyone a great day out.
The zoo, founded in 1972 by conservationist John Knowles, occupies a natural landscape of over 100 acres of countryside in a quiet corner of Hampshire, close to the town of Winchester.
A main attraction for young children is Penguin World, here these delightful creatures are kept in an award winning enclosure where their underwater antics can be viewed through three large viewing windows.
Keen on conservation the zoo is the home to over 200 rare breeds and endangered species. It has lions, tigers, hippo and pygmy hippo and okapi, it also has the beautiful Snow Leopard and the Persian Leopard, giraffe and the largest collection of antelope in the UK. Children will also enjoy the numerous varieties of monkeys.
The grounds are harmoniously laid out with fountains, lovely green lawns, picnic areas, and for those wishing to eat indoors there is a pleasant restaurant. There is also a children's amusement area.
At the centre of the park there is a mansion which acts as a venue for conventions and seminars, there is a "state of the art" lecture theatre in the conservation centre, and throughout the year the zoo holds interesting "event days" open to everyone.
The real joy of Marwell is to see its animals and birds in as close to natural conditions as is possible, thus encouraging their natural growth, development and behavior.
